Kirkland, WA was host to the inaugural Kirkland Criterium. This was a 6 turn course that for 70 minutes would challenge the riders with tight roads in between - a perfect course for a breakaway and stay out of trouble by getting to the front early.
The gun fired...Bing Knight, Greg Miller, Patrick Stanko, and Ross Spero were off...
Lap 1 was peppered with sketchy moves as riders jockeyed for position. Lap 2 coming into the last corner a crash ensued. Stanko stayed clean of the crash as he rolled up front. Unfortunately, the others found themselves hung up in the traffic jam of mangled bikes. Greg Miller suffered the worst of any team injuries and had to sit out. Stanko and five others gave it a couple of kicks, and they were off and running.
For the next fifty minutes the breakaway held off the pack and continued to put time into them. In rare fashion the breakaway lapped the field. Time to take a slight breather...
The last ten minutes of the race were intense as riders sprinted for the last few primes. The final two laps saw BRI put all their riders on the front to set up one of their guys that had made it into the break. Like a sly mongoose, Bing Knight kept Stanko mentally in check, and helped him navigate and maintain a top spot coming into one of the last straight aways.
Dumping into the last corner BRI found their lead out train disrupted, then the first half of it hitting the deck. Stanko took the inside tight, stayed clear of the crash, and headed for the finish. A Second Ascent rider came around on the left, then a Carter rider (who had made the early break) on the right, and HB held off the remaining pack.
Team Carter took top honors, while Stanko put HB on the second step.

Nick Weighall stormed to the top of the popular climb in a blistering 11:26. On his way to the summit, Nick broke teammate Lang Reynold's previous course record by 8 seconds. Teammate Bing Knight took 3rd with a respectable 11:40.
Known as one of the most difficult climbs in the area, the Cougar mountain course climbs roughly 1000 vertical feet in 2 miles for an average grade of 7.2%.

This past Sunday was the WA State TTT Championships held in Elma, WA.
The Cat 1/2s put two teams together that most definately instilled fear among their competitors. Both teams were stacked well with fire power and were ready to roll. A large part of the day's tactics were two fold; win the overall (by no less than 60s per Sam Johnson's request) and maintain HB's high rankings (2 in the top 5) in the race for BARR points.
The first team (Hegyvary, Stanko, Johnson, and Harm) confidently rolled out. Constant communication, steady smooth pace, nail the turnaround, and keep all four together were the main tasks at hand. The group of four kept things as tight as possible, nailed the turnaround, and adjusted their efforts accordingly as they blazed the course. The group put their stamp on the day with the only sub 49 minute course time - the next closest team was a minute and forty seconds down!! KaBoom!!
The second team (Clayville, Wingfield, Campbell) rolled out as well with nothing short of a smackdown in mind. Unfortunately, bike racing has a bad habit of going pear shaped at the most inopportune times. Twenty-two minutes into their effort Clayville's pedal body sheared off of the spindle crippling the team and bringing them to an untimely hault. It's required that at least 3 riders finish the race; with only 3 riders in their group, their day was done...some wonder if Clayville's brute strength simply destroyed the pedal.
HB nailed it, State TTT Champs and high BARR rankings intact.
Next big event for the team is the State ITT Championships, and then it's off to Nationals.
Go get 'em boys!!
